The EAZA 2016 Annual Conference
The EAZA Conference is the biggest annual gathering of the European zoo and aquarium community, bringing more than 600 delegates together for four days of meetings, presentations, discussions and networking opportunities. The event is primarily aimed at EAZA members, with most of EAZA's TAGs and committees holding meetings alongside a variety of special workshops. Plenary sessions bring all delegates together to focus on topics of broad interest to the community.
On behalf of Belfast City Council and Belfast Zoo, it is with great pleasure that I present Belfast as the host city for the EAZA Annual Conference 2016.
Belfast may be a small city, but we have a vibrant history. Once the home of the Irish linen industry, tobacco production, rope making and the world famous Harland and Wolff shipyard, Belfast lays claim to a unique history. There’s something for everybody, from shopping, tours, world class dining and a vivacious night life, to the wonderful zoo!
Belfast Zoo is located on the slopes of Cave Hill and offers stunning views over Belfast Lough, County Down, the Irish Sea and Scotland. There aren’t many zoos in the world that can match such a view! For over 80 years, the award winning zoo has been recognised as one of Northern Ireland’s premier visitor attractions, and as well as over 1000 animals of 150 species, our 55 acre site contains a rich variety of plants and gardens.
Our conference venue, the Belfast Waterfront Exhibition and Conference Centre, is currently undergoing a £29.5m extension, which will more than double the current event space, and offer new exhibition, banqueting and breakout areas, and all within a short walking distance of a range of hotels in the city centre.
We are hugely excited to be hosting the 2016 EAZA conference, and we look forward to welcoming you to the city in September 2016. You will be among 9.5 million visitors to the city each year, and I know you will enjoy a warm welcome and thrive in an environment filled with our great restaurants, nightlife and the city's strong cultural and artistic life – the famous Belfast craic!
